Ice cream takeaway and delivery in hot climates: packaging that keeps it cold

In a hot climate, ice cream has a hard journey between the counter and the customer's home. A few minutes in the sun or in a warm car can soften the surface and spoil the look of the product. The right packaging does not replace a freezer, but it buys time and protects the experience. In this guide we explain what to look for.

Insulation comes first

Foam (EPS) tubs provide thermal insulation by their structure. They slow down outside heat reaching the ice cream, which is why they are the first choice for courier deliveries, long car journeys and the hottest months. They come with lids, in half-kilo and one-kilo sizes, and stack neatly in the freezer.

Clear PET tubs show the flavours beautifully, but they do not insulate in the same way. In hot weather they are best for short trips, ready packs sold from the freezer or customers who are going straight home.

Lids, sleeves and bags

A tight lid keeps warm air out and stops drips in the bag. Fill tubs to the right level so the lid closes flat, and keep filled tubs in the freezer until the customer or the courier arrives.

A printed tub sleeve wraps the container, carries your brand and adds a layer between the tub and the hand. A kraft bag with your logo keeps several tubs together and out of direct sun while the customer walks to the car. Napkins and wet wipes in the bag are a small touch that customers remember on a hot day.

Habits that help the product

Packaging works best together with good habits: pack the ice cream last, just before handover; keep delivery orders in the freezer until the courier is at the door; and advise customers to put the tub in the freezer as soon as they arrive.

For cones and cups eaten on the spot, a cone sleeve keeps hands clean when the ice cream starts to melt, and a cup with the right size avoids overfilling.
